Oral health issues are significant in India since the country has one of the highest rates of oral cancer in the world. Dental diseases in India are result of factors such as poor oral hygiene, tobacco use and sugary diet. Additionally, the lack of awareness and the importance of dental health in India leads to the prevalence of dental health issues.

To spread awareness of oral health care and to provide dental check-up camps at the community doorstep, supported by American India Foundation and Dr. Nammy Patel, Dental Hygiene Program was implemented in the year 2020-2021 and focuses on facilitating affordable, accessible, and equitable oral health care in Amreli district of Gujarat.

Its key interventions included dental hygiene awareness campaigns with Anganwadi and school children in partnership with ICDS and schools, dental Bal-melas and dental check-up camps in government primary and secondary schools, and preventive and primary curative dental camps for community members.

  • The partnership project created dental hygiene awareness and dental check-ups among 3007 children and 3527 community members to support their preventive and primary curative dental treatments in Amreli district by covering 40+ villages.

1. Health Camp

Organizing cancer detection and general health check-up camps for women plays a crucial role in early disease detection and promoting overall well-being. These initiatives are particularly vital in low-resource settings, where access to regular healthcare may be limited. Thus with support of CottonConnect Farmers Community Foundation, organisation has organised General health camp at Chital, Lathi, Khambha, Timbi and Dhokadava. We also got support from Alipore Social Welfare Trust – Alipore Hospital and Rotary Club of Chikhali Riverfront for medical van and Primary Health Centres of our area for space and other arrangements.

Cancer Detection Camps for Women

Cancer detection camps for women focus on early identification of cancers, which significantly improves treatment outcomes. In rural Gujarat, India, a camp utilized effective screening methods like Mammogram, Pap smear and X – ray for breast cancer and cervical cancer. Camps were organised at Bhadva (Rajkot), Babara, Khadadhar, Damnagar (Amreli), Gangada and Samter (Gir Somnath). Total 447 participants were screened, leading to the detection of pre-cancerous lesions and early-stage cancers, underscoring the effectiveness of these basic screening techniques in resource-constrained environments.

Similarly, this initiative for cancer early diagnosis awareness program was implemented across various area of our program. Implementing such camps requires careful planning, including community outreach to raise awareness, collaboration with healthcare professionals and institutions, and the use of appropriate screening methods tailored to the community’s needs. These efforts not only aid in the early detection of health issues but also empower women with knowledge about their health, leading to better health outcomes.
