Why we exist
When the rains failed, people left. We began by asking what could help people stay.
In the early 1980s, drought and limited opportunities pushed families from rural communities in Amreli district to migrate in search of work. SSKK began by working alongside communities to address the conditions that made migration necessary — strengthening livelihoods, improving access to water and supporting people to build greater resilience where they lived.
More than four decades later, the challenges have evolved. Our approach remains rooted in the same belief: lasting change begins with people and communities.

Featured story
From learning a skill to earning an income
Shitalben Sanatbhai Desani, 35 · Panchvada village, Jasdan taluka, Rajkot district
- Before
- The household ran on one income — her husband's, from diamond craftsmanship. Stretching it across household costs and two children's schooling was getting harder every year.
- The barrier
- Working outside the home was not realistically available to her — chores and a young child made sure of that. Not "no jobs", but no jobs she could physically take.
- SSKK's role
- Shitalben came into contact with SSKK through digital literacy and nutrition training. Guided by the team, she was given the chance to serve as a taluka-level Krishi Sakhi promoting natural farming practices, and supplied with raw materials and tools for home-based imitation jewellery work.
- What it means
- The number matters less than its shape. A homemaker with no personal income became a woman with a leadership role in her taluka and a trade of her own, without leaving the house that was the constraint in the first place.
What changed

a month, from two income streams
₹0 to ₹8,000 a month, from two independent income streams rather than one — a monthly honorarium as a Krishi Sakhi, and around ₹3,000 a month from jewellery work fitted around the housework.

When one crop is no longer enough
Juna Rajpipla, Kotda Sangani, Rajkot
The rain took his groundnut. The crop beside it paid for the year.
Damjibhai Thummar had never grown pigeon pea alongside groundnut. When unseasonal rain halved his groundnut yield, the second crop earned nearly twice what the first one did.

The woman who trained forty others, then gave them her customers
Payalben Malvi did not just learn a trade in Dhokadva. She taught it to forty women, then handed over part of her own client book so they would have work from the first week.

Derdi Kumbhaji, Rajkot
Two hectares of unused forest land, and 3,200 trees
Derdi Kumbhaji looked at a barren plot nobody was using and decided to plant it. The saplings have doubled in height since.
